The opening day of the mega-open Qatar Masters saw many upsets. Vladimir Kramnik drew with Halkias Stelios on the 2nd board while Baadur Jobava lost to his compatriot Bela Khotenashvili.

Arkadij Naiditsch lost to Ankit Rajpara, GM Mateusz Bartel lost to IM Bogdan Belyakov, GM Viktor Bologan lost to IM Neelotpal Das and GM B Adhiban lost to IM Guido Caprio.
