The Rwanda Open Olympiad Team has been named for the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022, which takes place from July 28th to August 10th in Chennai, India.
The team members were selected at the end of the second and final qualification phase, which took place at Hilltop Hotel in Kigali, Rwanda from 23-27 May. The event was played as a 10-player round robin tournament with Anastase Barajinginywa emerging as the Winner of the Championship with convincing 8.5/9 points. The interesting thing about the team is that the top three players are unrated, and all five will be making their maiden Olympiad appearances.
A number of countries already revealed the composition of their teams for Chennai, such as: Norway, Germany, Spain, Serbia, Montenegro, Monaco, Kenya, India, Uganda, Sri Lanka, Malawi, South Sudan, Mongolia, Argentina … The 44th Chess Olympiad 2022 in Chennai will be the record-breaking Chess Olympiad as already 187 teams enrolled for the event. In the previous Chess Olympiad held in Baku in 2018, the participation record of team numbers was set with 176 countries, 184 teams in Open section, and 150 teams in the Women’s section.
