The FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission (EDC) banned Russian grandmaster Sergey Karjakin from taking part in FIDE events for six months. EDC found Sergey Karjakin guilty of breach of article 2.2.10 of the FIDE Code of Ethics on March 21st, 2022 and the 6-month ban expired yesterday. Sergey Karjakin appealed to FIDE’s decision, but his appeal got dismissed by the Appeal Chamber of the EDC.
Despite the ban, Karjakin took part in the round-robin event in Moscow which included Anatoly Karpov, Alexander Grischuk and Alexander Morozevich in the field. All four players have in higher or lesser extent supported the Russian invasion in Ukraine, with Anatoly Karpov – as member of the Russian Duma – voting to recognize the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. While Grischuk has voiced his opposition to the war during the Belgrade Grand Prix, none of the four players have signed the open letter by Russian chess players to Vladimir Putin to stop the military actions. Interestingly, the commentary of the event will be done by Sergey Shipov, who is also penalized by the FIDE Ethics Commission (see the full story here).
The next tournament for Sergey Karjakin starts this month in Moscow and features the total prize fund of 230.000 euros.
