Tan Zhongyi advances to Women’s Candidates semi-finals

The Women’s Candidates Pool B tournament is halfway through in Khiva, Uzbekistan. Aleksandra Goryachkina booked her seat for the semifinals after defeating Alexandra Kosteniuk with a 2.5-1.5 score, taking a two-day rest before the next game. Tan Zhongyi and Kateryna Lagno needed to play the tiebreak match as the regular part finished in a tie 2-2, with four played draws.

Tan Zhongyi started the tiebreaks with a victory and held draws in the other three games. Kateryna Lagno had her chances to equalize the score in the third game of the tiebreaks, but missed the winning opportunity and almost ended up losing again. Needing to win on demand the fourth game of the match, Lagno reached a clearly better position, but it wasn’t enough to score a full point. With the final result of 2.5-1.5, Tan Zhongyi advanced to the semifinals where she goes against Aleksandra Goryachkina.
