TCEC round 1 concluded, Rybka and Equinox held to draw

TCEC round 1 of stage 1 has been completed. All but two 3000+ engines – Houdini, Critter, Gull, Komodo, Vitruvius, and Stockfish won their games at the start of the computer chess championship.

The biggest surprise of the round was Rybka 4.1, that was held to a draw by the 300+ ELO lower rated Scorpio 2.75. TCEC does not seem to be a lucky competition for Rybka, as in the first edition of the event it lost to Houdini, and later on was defeated again by the same engine 23.5 – 16.5 in a long match. This time Rybka could not outplay Scorpio and it will be interesting to see whether Scorpio’s version is playing above it’s initially assigned strength of 2787, or Rybka 4.1 is overrated.

Gaviota 0.86b3 brought the second surprise of the round, as it held the 3077 rated Equinox to a draw. Moreover, Gaviota did it with black, rightly evaluating a complex endgame.
All other games finished with expected results, as Houdini with version 3.0 PRO made its first step for defending the title.
