The 2016 Gibraltar Chess Festival will take place from January 25 to February 5 in Caleta Hotel, Gibraltar. It is an open event with 10 rounds of Swiss that features some of the top players in the world.
The top seeded player is Hikaru Nakamura, winner of the previous edition of the festival, followed by second seed Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, who is coming off of a strong performance in the London Chess Classics and the former World Champion Vishy Anand as the third seed. The rest of the top ten is comprised only by players in the 2700 rating bracket – Pentala Harikrishna, Chao Li, Yangyi Yi, Dimitry Jakovenko, Radoslaw Wojtaszek, Richard Rapport and Laurent Fressinet.
The tournament will feature 10 rounds of chess battles between 246 participants from more than 50 countries. The festival is split into three tournaments – Masters, Challengers and Amateurs. The prize fund is 185 000 British pounds, with 20 000 going to the winner of the Masters event.
