Wesley So after the US Chess Championship Round 1: I should have played another opening

The 2022 US Chess Championship kicked off today in Saint Louis and the defending champion Wesley So drew his first game against Awonder Liang. Wesley was not satisfied with the result despite the fact he had black pieces. In the post-game interview, Wesley disclosed why he needed almost two minutes to make the first move and regretted his opening choice. So explained that he found out just before the game that Awonder studies at Chicago University and that he didn’t play many chess games lately. “Maybe I should have played another opening because Awonder hasn’t played a lot of chess recently“, said Wesley adding that you cannot simultaneously be a professional chess player and a college student: “You miss too much classes and professors don’t know anything about chess“.
