The FIDE World Chess Cup 2025 is going to take place October 30 – November 27 in India. It will feature 206 players in 8 knockout rounds of classical games. The top 50 seeds automatically enter in Round 2, while the remaining 156 players start from Round 1. Each round consists of two classical games, followed by rapid and blitz tiebreaks if necessary. The competition will span nearly a month, with rest days scheduled between key stages to accommodate the intense match schedule.
The World Cup serves as a critical part of the FIDE World Championship cycle, with the top three finishers qualifying for the 2026 Candidates Tournament, which determines the next challenger for the World Chess Championship title. 8 players reached the FIDE World Chess Cup 2025 quarterfinal stage. Jose Martinez Alcantara, Donchenko, Esipenko and Shankland have joined Sindarov, Yakubboev, Wei Yi, and Arjun Erigaisi. From them Nodirbek Yakubboev qualified directly to the semifinal, while the others have to go through a tiebreak.
Only four remain for the semifinal – Wei Yi, Nodirbek Yakkuboev, Andrey Esipenko and Javokhir Sindarov, and only three of them will qualify for the FIDE Candidates. Once the semifinals are played, we will already know at least two of those names, and the final stretch of this World Cup will begin.
