World Chess Cup Quarterfinals Set

Peter Svidler (Russia), David Navara (Czech Republic) and Teimour Radjabov (Azerbaijan) booked the seats for the World Chess Cup Quarterfinals after the matches with classical time control and enjoyed a free day as the remaining five pairings proceeded to the quick tiebreaks on Thursday.

Reigning European champion Vladimir Potkin was eliminated by his compatriot, finalist of the Candidate Matches, Alexander Grischuk. Earlier Potkin won another Russian derby, against Nikita Vitiugov.

After the heroic comeback in the 2nd classical game, Judit Polgar continued the battle with Leinier Dominguez in the quick games. Exchanging the victories in the four rapid games, the overall score was tied 3-3. Being the former World Blitz Champion, Dominguez was seen as favourite in the blitz games, but Polgar won that mini-match and completed the qualification to the next round.
