The 44th Chess Olympiad 2022 takes place from July 28th to August 10th in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The hosting country of the event was changed twice before India took the role of the Olympiad host for the first time ever. (the developing story can be found here)
The event is played in Open and Women’s sections, in 11 rounds, swiss system, with time control: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 1. The teams of each section will be composed of four players + one reserve player, the team captain, and the team coach. With 187 teams registered in Men’s competition and 162 teams registered in the Women’s competition, the 2022 Chennai Olympiad breaks the participation record previously set in Batumi, 2018.
The Men’s battlefield is led by the USA (with an average rating of 2771), Azerbaijan (with an average rating of 2705) and India (with an average rating of 2696). Taking into account the absence of Russian and Chinese teams, the USA is an absolute favorite to win the event. List of participants can be found here / R1 Team pairings / R1 Board pairings
