The first-ever Chess Olympiad Torch Relay took place on the 19th of June at Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi. Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi lit the Flame and handed it over to 15th World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand. The Torch traveled through the country to 75 cities, celebrating the 75th Year of the country’s Independence and India’s 1st ever Chess Olympiad, finally arriving at the Chess Olympiad venue in Mahabalipuram.
International Masters Srihari L R and Harshavardhan G B, together with other local authorities, took over the relay at the iconic Shore Temple in presence of local authorities and chess enthusiasts, and it was the last relay before the Torch reaches the Opening ceremony of the event scheduled for today at 19:00 (local time).
