The Play-In for the Chessable Masters, the 2nd event on the $2 million+ 2023 Champions Chess Tour, takes place on Chess.com on March 13 and will decide which 52 players join Magnus Carlsen, Wesley So, Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana in the main event from April 3-7. It begins with a 9-round Swiss tournament, with the top finishers then advancing to Match Play, where a 2-game match, with possible Armageddon, decides who qualifies and to which of three Divisions. For example, the players who finish 1-4 in the Swiss will play those who finish 5-8. The time control is rapid chess, with 10 minutes per player for all moves, plus a 2-second increment per move from move 1. For the Armageddon decider, players bid the lowest amount of time they are willing to play to get to choose colour. The opponent gets 10 minutes, with no increment, with Black winning the match in case of a draw.
Some of the best players will accept in the tournament – GM Vladimir Fedoseev, GM Quang Liem Le, GM Levon Aronian, GM Vladislav Artemiev, GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov, GM D Gukesh, GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, etc.
