ChessDailyNews also highlights the possible calendar clash of the intended dates for the US Championship with the FIDE Grand Prix events. Fabiano Caruana, reigning US champion Hikaru Nakamura, and vice-champion Gata Kamsky are competing in the Grand Prix series.

Lisbon Grand Prix is taking place on 17 April – 1 May, 2013, while Madrid Grand Prix is starting on 22 May and continues until 4 June. The US Championship is usually scheduled for May.

Update, Fabiano Caruana’s statement for Chessdom (10th December):

There now appear to be some FIDE Zonal issues regarding my participation.
Yesterday, I received an e-mail from Zonal President Francisco Guadalupe of the USCF stating that they “need to check with FIDE” and that they “hope to have an answer within a couple of days.”
Whatever the outcome, I do wish the USCF and the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis the very best for their upcoming 2013 US Championship.”
