Gupta first, Chakkaravarthy moves to clear second in the India Premier Championship

Abhijeet Gupta of PSPB with 8.5 points enjoys a half point lead over J. Deepan Chakkaravarthy of Tamil Nadu, after eleven rounds of the 49th National Premier Chess Championship, organised by Marathwada Chess Association at MIT today.

GN Gopal of PSPB and SP Sethuraman of TN were pushed to third spot with 7.5 points each, as their games were drawn today. Five players are on 7 points.

Abhijeet (Gupta) faced Abhijit (Kunte) in a Grunfeld defence, wherein Kunte forced a draw by repetition of moves to claim a draw in 30 moves.

On the third board, J. Deepan Chakkaravarthy kept his chances alive for a top placing with a resounding victory over his state mate P. Shyam Nikhil. Though Shyam had same number of pieces, Deepan outplayed him position-wise in 42 moves. Shyam’s pieces were completely blocked and remained passive, whereas, Deepan had a total command over the key squares.

GM Deep Sengupta of West Bengal dashed the hopes of GM Tejas Bakre of Indian Airlines, following a neo Grunfeld defence. Deep’s pseudo sacrifice of knight on 20th move forced Tejas to lose his rook on the next move. The better exchange helped Deep to move from 6 points into the higher score bracket of 7.

In the longest match of the day, defending champion Parimarjan Negi, playing his favourite Sicilian defence, tried in vain for a win against GN Gopal. In the end game, he had two connected pawns, to a single pawn of Gopal, in addition to a rook and minor piece. Gopal stoutly defended the position to ensure half a point for him.

IM norm chances of G Akash (who needed half a point) from Tamil Nadu were shattered by Vidit Santosh Gujrathi of Maharashtra in a Kings Indian game. Vidit’s connected f- and g- pawns marched relentlessly towards the promoting square, when Akash gave up the fight.

In an opposite colour bishop and rook ending, SP Sethuraman agreed to split the point with S. Arun Prasad of PSPB in a Grunfeld defence.

In the Gligoric-Taimanov system of Kings Indian game by Shashikant Kutwal, Sundararajan Kidambi of Railways had two connected outside passers, enabling him to win comfortably. In a similar fashion, the three connected pawns of Neelotpal Das of PSPB brooked no answer from his team mate MR Lalith Babu, resulting in a win for Neelotpal.

On the distaff side, Padmini Rout of Orissa was back to winning ways against Aditya Udeshi of Maharashtra, while the other two women WGM Swati Ghate and Soumya Swaminathan both from Maharashtra drew their game between them.
