Tata Steel Masters 2023 – Day 2 & Giri’s sensational victory over Gukesh!

The second round of the Tata Steel Masters 2023 kicked off today with a famous gong sound. It was a sensational day with two decisive results, while five games finished in a draw.

Anish Giri’s brilliant victory over Indian teen chess star Gukesh D certainly marked the round. Giri was in the attacking mood, performing two consecutive sacrifices to stun his opponent and get the winning position. The game finished after only 27 moves with Giri joining the top with 1.5 points.

World Champion Magnus Carlsen prevailed against Vincent Keymer. Carlsen had a clearly better position from the early middlegame, eventually transforming it into a full point in the rooks’ endgame.

The rest of the games finished in a draw and four players tie for the top with 1.5 points each: Magnus Carlsen, Anish Giri, Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Ding Liren. Replay all games here / Replay Day 2 video coverage here
