100-year-old chess player Manuel Alvarez Escudero opens Candidates Chess R5

Today’s special guest of the FIDE Candidates Chess Tournament 2022 was Mr. Manuel Alvarez Escudero, a 100-year-old active chess player. He made a first ceremonial move in the game between the Candidates’ youngest participants: 19-year-old Alireza Firouzja and 24-year-old Jan-Krzysztof Duda. Just a few months ago, Mr. Escudero played the league in Madrid, and one of his latest games was especially extraordinary as he met with 90 years younger opponent.
