3rd Iraq International Chess Championship

The 3rd Iraq International Chess Championship was held on 23-29th March at the Al Mansoor Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq. 66 participants from 16 nations, of which 28 title holders, competed.

Headed by GM Konstantin Tarlev of Ukraine and GM Merab Gagunashvili of Georgia, the 9-round Swiss witnessed tough fight in most of the rounds. At the end, both Merab Gagunashvili and the young Egyptian IM Hesham Abdelrahman tied for the first place to split $5500 equally.

The event was opened under the patronage of Youth and Sports Minister H.E. Jassim Jaffer and concluded by Iraq Olympic Committee first deputy Mr. Bashar Mustafa.

The Chief Arbiter was IA/IO Shaker Alafoo of Bahrain. The total prize fund was $20,000.
