African Individual Chess Championship 2021 (final round!)

The African Individual Chess Championship 2021 is going to take place 17-28 May in Lilongwe, Malawi. The event has separate sections for men and women. Both tournaments will be 9 rounds Swiss.

The stakes at the African Individual Chess Championship are high as the 4 top placed players in the open section will qualify for the FIDE World Chess Cup 2021. Top seeded for the event are Egypt’s GM Ahmed Adly and GM Amin Bassem. Their main opposition can come from Algeria’s GM Bilil Bellahcene and GM Mohamen Haddouche, or some of the upcoming young players like IM Dante Beukes who recently won his national championship with 9,0/9.

In the Women section the field is balanced, with WGM Shahenda Wafa, WIM Sabrina Latreche and WIM Ayah Moaataz as rating favorites

Lilongwe, Malawi and the venue

Lilongwe is the capital city of the African country of Malawi. With a population of close to 1 million citizens it is the major economic and cultural hub of Malawi. The city’s proximity to Mozambique and Zambia give Lilongwe additional regional importance.

The venue of the African Individual Chess Championship is the Golden Peacock Hotel. Initially the Crossroads Hotel was the choice, but it was changed a few days before the start of the event.
