Bulgarian Chess Federation expelled from European Chess Union

At the General Assembly held on 10th September in Baku, Azerbaijan, the European Chess Union voted with overwhelming majority to suspend the membership of the Bulgarian Chess Federation.

The ECU Board motion against the Bulgarian Chess Federation membership was backed by 37 votes from 51 federations in attendance. 11 votes were against, 2 abstained (with blank ballots) and 1 was invalid.

By this decision Bulgarian Chess Federation is expelled from the European Chess Union according to the article 7(b) of the ECU statutes.

The GA confirmed that Bulgarian chess players can still enter the official tournaments by individual registrations.

One day earlier, the FIDE Ethics Commission suspended Silvio Danailov, President of Bulgarian Chess Federation, for 18 months for violating clause 2.2.3 of the Code of Ethics in a serious degree.

Bulgarian Chess Federation to be suspended from FIDE?

FIDE Ethics Commission recommended suspension of the Bulgarian Chess Federation (BCF) as federation member of FIDE, due to BCF’s failure to acknowledge and observe the decisions of Ethics Commission. The BCF would be given one month to comply with Ethics Commission decisions or the ban will come to force. The Assembly accepted the recommendation.
