GM Mihail Nikitenko wins CFSL Golden Jubilee Open Chess Championship 2022

Sri Lanka’s Chess Federation Golden Jubilee Open Chess Championship 2022 took place from 23-27 November at Sports Ministry Pavilion, Colombo. The event attracted 37 entries among whom 13 titled players. The tournament was played in 9 rounds, swiss system, with time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment. The total prize fund of the event was Rs 3.650.000 (~10.000$).

GM Mihail Nikitenko from Belarus convincingly won the event scoring 8.5/9 points! Indian grandmaster Thejkumar MS trailed by 2 points and came second with 6.5 points. Four players tied for the third place scoring 6 points, each, but GM Alexei Barsov had best tiebreak criteria to clinch bronze. Sri Lankan National Champion IM Susal De Silva who was the top seed finished the event in 7th place with 5.5 points. Scroll down for the final rankings

The best-ranked female player of the event was 15-year-old Sanudula K M Dahamdi from Sri Lanka who scored 5.5 points to be 9th on the overall rankings. Besides the prize for the first Woman, Sandula K M Dahamdi gained 129,2 ELO points!

The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka organized the Golden Jubilee Open Chess Championship 2022 celebrating the 50th anniversary of the federation. The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka was formed in 1972 after Bobby Fischer defeated Boris Spassky in the World Chess Championship match and announced the new chess era. Sri Lanka’s local chess enthusiasts got together and formed the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka on 3rd September 1972 under the presidency of Mr. VP Vittachchi.
