GM Ziaur Rahman wins the NIT International Grandmasters Open

Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh won the title at the NIT International Grandmasters Open Chess Tournament, organised by Nagpur Improvement Trust at Naivedhyam Recreation Centre, Nagpur, today.

Ziuar Rahman did not take any risk and settled for a quick draw with IM Ankit Rajpara of Maharashtra, to raise his tally to 9 points and collect a cash prize of three lakh rupees.

Top seeded Aleksandrov Aleksej of Belarus also finished with 9 points defeating MR Lalith Babu of PSPB. Better Buchholz tiebreak score favoured Ziaur to clinch the title.

Second seeded Kravtsiv Martyn of Ukraine collected 8.5 points by agreeing to a quick draw Diptayan Ghosh of West Bengal in a Catalan opening game to secure the third spot.

Six players vied for the fourth to ninth places, five of them Indians, the fourth place going to former world under 14 champion Vidit Santosh Gujrathi of Maharashtra.

Vidit, after exchanging the queens, managed to get rid of Tamil Nadu IM Nitin’s two pawns, which was sufficient to post a win in 34 moves. Hianshu Sharma of Railways combined his rooks well to register a win against Bangladesh IM Minhazuddin Ahamed, enabling him to win the fifth place.

In the French defence adopted by newly approved GM Sahaj Grover of Delhi, GA Stany of Karnataka exchanged the queens on move 15, after gaining a pawn. Sahaj sacrificed his rook, leading his pawn to c2, his black squared bishop controlling the c1-promotion square. Stany could not stop the pawn promotion by Sahaj, leading to a queen and bishop vs rook and bishop ending. Stany had a slight compensation of three additional pawns, but could not deny the full point to Sahaj.

Former under 12 world champion Karthikeyan Murali of Tamil Nadu lost his queen for a rook and bishop of the Russian GM Andrei Deviatkin. Karthikeyan resigned, when he was about to lose his knight.

WGM Swathi Ghate of LIC lost to Asian Junior champion N. Srinath of TN in just 19 moves of a Sicilian defence. WGM Nisha Mohota of PSPB also lost to Vovk Andrey of Ukraine.
