Ian Nepomniachtchi was short in his comment on Shevchenko’s case, linking the El Mundo article and saying, “Que maestro”. Later the same evening, Nepo added, “Whenever I’m asked about cheating in chess, I say the same thing every time: the extent of cheating on the Internet is underestimated, but the real problem is that we have no idea how widespread cheating is in OTB. Perhaps, this high-profile incident will affect the situation.”
Vladimir Kramnik was as prolific as ever, blaming the whole situation and attacking Chess.com again. See the full Kramnik statements here (Ed.note: Topalov recent comments on Toiletgate just a month ago)
Ben Finegold jokes, “During TT he had a note next to his computer “Vlad, don’t tell anyone what I’m doing!””
Susan Polgar says, “Phone in Toilet! Big sad story in chess! Remember, everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty but this looks really bad.”
Vasif Durarbayli: “It seems that Kramnik has finally hit the target correctly! The former World Champion has been relentlessly proclaiming that there are many cheaters and that certain players should be checked. He even wrote about GM Kirill Shevchenko. Honestly, there aren’t many chess players left who haven’t been targeted by Kramnik, but it appears there was some truth in what he was saying after all.”
Laurent Fressinet: “Actually joked quite a few times that Kirill and I generally score 1,5/2 on the top boards in bundesliga … I like him and couldn’t imagine something like that but if the facts are proven, he should be punished with extreme severity”
Irina Bulmaga: “Shocking and hard to believe. For a second I thought it’s April 1st…”
Federico Marin: There were two phones found at the championship. The second one is a Motorola with no SIM card. This afternoon the police will intervene to find the actual owner. If it is Shevchenko or a person close to him, all will be easy. But if it is of another participant, the complications will be major. (full article)
Francisco Vallejo Pons: “The cheating problem in chess is getting out of control. FIDE should not allow tournaments to be rated without implementing very serious controls, or we risk losing chess’s prestige.”
