Gulnar Mammadova wins Azerbaijan Women’s Chess Championship 2021

The Azerbaijan Women’s Chess Championship 2021 took place from 21-30 May in Nakhchivan.

IM Gulnar Mammadova scored 9/11 points to convincingly win the Championship. Mammadova earned the title of the Azerbaijani Women’s Chess Champion for the first time in her chess career.

18 years old WIM Govhar Beydullayeva, 4 times Azerbaijani Champion WGM Zeinab Mamedjarova and WGM Khayala Abdulla tied for the second place with 7.5 points. According to tiebreak criteria, Beydullayeva was second and Mamedjarova claimed bronze. Abdulla took the 4th place.

The top rated female player from Azerbaijan IM Gunay Mammadzada could not participate the event since she took part in FIDE Women’s Grand Prix, being played in Gibraltar simultaneously with Azerbaijani Championship.

The Azerbaijan Women’s Chess Championship 2021 was played in 11 rounds with time control 90 minutes for 40 moves + 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per each move. The total prize fund of the event was 7.000 azn (around 3.300 eur).
