Penultimate round in Baden-Baden

Viswanathan Anand

The strong Grenke Classic tournament is coming to an end. The penultimate round is being played today and the players will try to have a good final sprint.

Fabiano Caruana is the sole leader of the tournament and has a decent chance of securing overall first place today. He is playing with the white pieces against Michael Adams. The game started in positional manner. Fabiano already has the pair of bishops, but Adams’ pawn structure is very solid. This fight will be very tense given the Englishman’s ability to maneuver and the Italian’s will to win.

The player that has more chances to catch Fabiano is World Champion Viswanathan Anand, as he is the only participant one point behind the leader. He faces GM Daniel Fridman with the white pieces today. The German used his usual Petroff and the game seems quite balanced after 19 moves.

The last game of the day faces GM Arkadij Naiditsch, who suffered a very disappointing loss yesterday, and GM Georg Meier, who has been showing good preparation getting good positions out of the opening. They played a Nimzo-Indian where Meier chose tho exchange the dark-squared bishops. Another long struggle lies ahead.
