India National Challengers Chess Championship – Debashis clinches title

Tirupathi (28 May 12): Third seed and World Under-18 Bronze medalist International Master Debashis Das of Odisha with ten points won the 50th National Challengers Chess Championship after settling for half point against Bitan Banerjee of West Bengal in the thirteenth and final round here at Ramatulasi Kalyana Mandapam on Monday.

Fide Master Diptayan Ghosh of West Bengal, G Akash of Tamilnadu and Sagar Shah of Maharahstra, who beat Akash in the final round tied for the runner up position with nine and half points but better tie break score helped Ghosh to secure runner-up trophy while Akash finished third and Sagar Shah satisfied with fourth spot finish.

Top thirty players from this event qualified for the forthcoming National Premier Chess Championship which is scheduled to be held at West Bengal in the month of October.

In a colourful closing ceremony, Dr. P C Rayalu, Chairman, Food Processing Industries, South Zone-II, Govt. of India gave away the prizes along with Shri. Bharat Singh, Secretary All India Chess Federation, Shri. D V Sundar, Vice-President World Chess Federation and Shri. A Narasimha Reddy, President Andhra Pradesh Chess Association and Shri. Kanna Reddy, Secretary Andhra Pradesh Chess Association.
